Former Nokia CEO Olli-Pekka Kallasvuo was ousted from his earlier position this year as Nokia has been facing sagging smartphone marketshare and nothing particularly impressive on the featurephone market. So, what’s OPK (as some referred to him) doing these days? He chatted with the (unofficial) Nokia Blog. Turns out, the former CEO is relaxing.
When asked about his ‘retirement’ activities, Kallasvuo said that he’s doing things you’d expect, including shopping, playing tennis, watching horse racing and reading. The former CEO also wants to teach some business management class to business students. The CEO said that he has turned down offers from other companies, and he still does serve as chairman of Nokia Siemens, the joint venture between Nokia and Germany company Siemens. Kallasvuo likely isn’t hurting in the money department – SEC filings made by Nokia show that his salary in his last year of employment at Nokia he was making $5.9 million per year.
When asked about his current phone, OPK said that he was using a Nokia E7 that the company let him keep after his departure. Regarding the iPhone, OPK said (and I quote), “I don’t think I’ll ever buy an iPhone.”
OPK was replaced at Nokia by former Microsoft exec Stephen Elop – a Canadian who’s the first non-Finn CEO in the entire 145 year history of Nokia. As many readers are likely aware, Nokia owned the mobile phone industry for a long time, but their smartphone offerings, specially in the iPhone era, have left some unimpressed. Despite a massive marketshare, still, some foresee doom for the Finnish giant if they are unable to innovate with their smartphones.
