Uncharted 3: Drake's Deception
Release Date: 1st November, 2011
Developer: Naughty Dog
Publisher: Sony Computer Entertainment
Genre: Third Person Action-Adventure
Cross Platform: No

Uncharted 3: Drake's Deception may be a long way from its November release date, but we managed to get access to the closed multiplayer beta over the weekend. The beta was restricted solely to Infamous 2 owners. However, as of today, it is now available to to anyone with a PSN account. The multiplayer modes include the classic PvP deathmatch dubbed Free for All, in addition to Team Deathmatch, Three Team Deathmatch, Hardcore, and Co-Op Arena. In Team Deathmatch, players are split into teams battling each other for frags, while Three Team Deathmatch does the same with the anarchy spread over three teams. This makes for intense battles, especially when all three teams face off at the same time. Hardcore mode is the Free For All with all power-ups and perks taken out of the equation. This distils the multiplayer experience down to skill. The Co-Op arena is a survival mode that pits you and two of your buddies against never ending waves of baddies; much like the Horde mode from Gears of War. The multiplayer beta continues till 13th July,  so get cracking on the 1.6 GB download. The developer Naughty Dog has promised two additional multiplayer modes - Co-op Hunter and Co-op Adventure, in addition to a new Yemen map, which will be added on 9th July.

This past week at E3, myself and Ganiman got a chance to wait in line for 40 minutes and get our hands on a multiplayer demo of the upcoming Uncharted 3: Drake’s Deception.
We jumped into one of the game’s new multiplayer modes- 2 vs. 2 vs. 2 (or Three Team Deathmatch) in the Chateau level. Everything that player’s have come to expect from the Uncharted series remains in tact in this new installment. The game play feels exactly the same so everyone will feel at home when jumping online to “pwn some noobs”. There really isn’t too much to say here, I noticed at least one new weapon, we killed people, and then I won the match by literally kicking Ganiman in the ass.
Also new to Uncharted 3 is the ability to customize your characters. Players can create four load out slots which contain both of their weapons, two upgradable booster slots, one paid booster slot and weapon modifications. The player’s character is also customizable, allowing for things like different hats, customizable character emblems and more. There’s also a new balancing system in place that can help tip the scale in the favor of the losing team, or give the winning team some extra cash opportunities during the match. Unfortunately we didn’t have the opportunity to check out most of these options given that there were so many fans waiting for us to finish so they could get their hands on the game.
There are also new features being added such as the ability to allow you to join games already in progress. Another great option is the ability to play multiplayer in a split screen format, allowing the second player to log into their own PSN ID. Uncharted 2 brought a unique feature to the game with Twitter integration. This time with Uncharted 3 along with their social media integration there will be the new Uncharted TV that will highlight the best user generated content as well as videos from YouTube.
You can look forward to Uncharted 3 when it launches this November.
Hello CustomisationLogging into the multiplayer more presents an embedded video player called Uncharted TV. At the moment, it's populated with multiplayer introduction videos and game promo material, but that will soon make way for kill-of-the-week videos and such reminiscent of a similar implementation in Call of Duty multiplayer. While the second Uncharted had a plain vanilla multiplayer mode, Naughty Dog has finally brought customisation to the franchise. Killing enemies in myriad ways earns players medals and money, which can then be spent on the various unlocks and modifications.

You can change the appearance of your multiplayer avatar with fully customisable clothing, headgear, and a unique way to express yourself with the bespoke emblems, which should lead to much hilarity considering the creativity of the online community. The mods go beyond mere eye candy. The game allows you to increase weapon clip sizes, add better scopes, and increase speed, accuracy, and damage of your weapons. Some of these mods can be purchased outright, but the better ones need unlocking. Ratching up kills earns you medals and treasures, which are vital to level up your character. The higher the level of your character the better the power-ups, perks, and weapon mods get.

Hands On: Uncharted 3 Multiplayer

Weapons & Power-UpsThe game offers four weapon slots. The first two slots account for a primary weapon \ side-arm combo, while two other slots house Boosters - Uncharted's version of the perk system. These power-ups boost player attributes or add some form of lethality for the duration of the round for a cost. I never found myself buying a single booster, as the cost was too steep for what was offered. The last slot lets you select Medal Kickbacks, which is akin to the generic killstreak. It becomes deployable as soon as you collect requisite number of medals. Unlike the Boosters, the Medal Kickbacks deliver uber cool powers which include instant RPG spawns, grenades that transform into cluster bombs, never having to reload, and one that even lets you turn into a swarm of spiders.

Weapons are well balanced with the powerful AK-47 being tempered with slow rate of fire and reduced accuracy, whileG-MAL - the other assault rifle - is the exact opposite. Campers will love the Dragunov rip-off Dragon Sniper, which offers a satisfying one shot kill. Then there's also the M9 submachine gun in addition to fixed heavy machine guns to keep your itchy trigger finger satisfied.

The Maps
Despite a bit of aliasing evident, in addition to random blackouts and freezing, the beta looked pretty good. There are two levels on offer at the moment - Chateau and Airstrip, with the former being a typical Uncharted map set inside a dilapidated structure housed in a tropical paradise. It looks gorgeous with its foliage and a deep contrast evident between the dark and light areas. The map has plenty of opportunity to engage in Uncharted's brand of gymnastics, with a fair bit of vertical design featuring enough ledges and alcoves to nestle in that perfect camping spot.

Airstrip is a traditional deathmatch map, with wide open areas dotted with loads of cover. It starts off with a spectacular chase which puts one team inside a big-ass transport plane and ends with you raising hell through the hangars dotting the airstrip.Finding action is easy here, while the rooftops and catwalks offer good vantage points for campers. Action is pretty fast, while a generous sprinkling of cover combined with well balanced weapons gives Uncharted 3 multiplayer a tactical edge.

Hands On: Uncharted 3 Multiplayer

Multiplayer TwistsTo ensure gameplay balance the team modes get the Power Play twist as soon as the tide of the battle tilts in favour of a team. This little trick gives the leading team a handicap, while the trailing one enjoys perks giving that extra bit of an edge. For example, if you are getting your ass handed out to you, you may suddenly find yourself graced with double damage or the ability to spot enemies through walls. Conversely, stronger team will find one of their members being tagged as a VIP target, which they now have to protect from the enemy or risk bleeding a lot of points.

A tighter buddy system is a boon in co-op modes. Co-op warfare is all about sticking to your mate, which is made easier with a persistent waypoint marker perpetually pointing towards you mate. Respawning doesn't always mean being separated, because you now have the option to respawn near your buddy, as long as he's not engaged someone in a firefight. Your buddy can run over to pick up treasure chests and dropped items for you, while you cover his ass. You can also celebrate a team kill by high-fiving or fist bumping your mate for added points. Uncharted 3 even allows you to call in your FaceBook buddies for a match, even if they aren't in your PSN friend list.

Hands On: Uncharted 3 Multiplayer

With two more multiplayer modes inbound, in addition to yet another map, Uncharted 3 Multiplayer beta looks promising. The action is fast, while the customisations, perks, and bonuses keep things interesting. The use of vertical design, and Uncharted's trademark platforming elements, when combined with interesting team and cop-operative modes gives great depth to the multiplayer experience. Despite just two levels on offer in the beta, I ended up spending way more time playing it than I had expected. Considering the strength and the pull of this franchise, there is a distinct possibility that we may have a Call of Duty level of multiplayer craze on the horizon; albeit with a third person twist.
