Unrealistic 3G Internet Speeds Flaunted in India
21.1 MBPS is a whopping 3G internet speed to start with as advertised by most Indian Telecom Operators. Have you ever thought about this?
  • MP3 Audio File (10 MB) within 5 secs
  • DIVX Movie File (700 MB) within 350 secs
It is an estimated speed of 2MB per second which beats even a fastest file transfer over Bluetooth from your cellphone to PC. However, these claims are just theoretical and not practical. It is the theoretical capacity of the 3G spectrum. However, the actual capacity depends on a number of other factors like network signal, source bandwidth, number of users in a particular base station range, climatic conditions, etc. As of now, the actual speed varies from 1 Mbps to 3.3 Mbps for a majority of 3G network operators.
One of the major issues with 3G internet access on most networks is the latency and low upload speed. Although, you do get a very high download speed when you are downloading any file, the browsing experience is equally bad. This actually varies during the day and over different networks. This issue might be temporary as most 3G networks are new and continuously fine tuning its parameters. One thing I can surely say is the fact that movie downloads via torrents on 3G is a dream come true. I have never seen such high download speeds on traditional broadband services.
Thus, 3G services in the form data cards still cannot be seen as a replacement of always on broadband services They cannot be relied upon for office work, financial transactions, online gaming and other similar requirements needing low latency and continuous internet connection.
Tata Docomo happens to be the only telecom operator in India that is providing a 3G data card supporting a download speed of upto 21 Mbps as of today. All the other networks in India provide just two options for a data card which is at a speed of 3.6 Mbps and 7.2 Mbps
