The Apple iPad is looking like a success and with Apple closing on Blackberry sales with it’s iPhone maybe it’s time for RIM to try to take something back from Apple. There are rumours of a potential tablet PC from RIM, the makers of the Blackberry, that would take on the iPad.

Well, well. It looks like the folks at Lucid have been keeping busy. After getting its Hydra GPU load balancer onto motherboards last year, the Israeli firm now plans to bring similar vendor-agnostic multi-GPU capabilities... to graphics cards themselves. We're not talking about expensive multi-GPU boards, either.
Instead, as the diagram above illustrates, Lucid's new Unity graphics board architecture puts the Hydralogix 200 chip (formerly Hydra 200) on a single-GPU graphics card. That card can then be paired up with any graphics card from any manufacturer and run in multi-GPU mode, even on motherboards that don't have explicit support for multi-GPU functionality. So goes Lucid's spiel, at least.
Lucid stresses the "low cost" of its Hydra chip, boasting that "mainstream graphics users can now buy even a $99 graphics card and upgrade their system in the future with the brand graphics card of their choice." That's a slight embellishment, though. The press release goes on to note that Hydra-enabled graphics cards will show up this holiday season at "accessible prices under $199."
If Lucid can pull this one off—that is, deliver solid performance in reasonable configurations—we might see a new breed of graphics cards emerge, with vendor-agnostic multi-GPU capabilities ready for use on any system with more than one PCI Express x16 slot. Such functionality could come in particularly handy for Nvidia graphics cards, since as far as I can tell, most sub-$150 motherboards lack SLI support. The question, of course, will be how much of a premium the Hydra-equipped cards carry.

Microsoft announced the conference to celebrate beauty of the web on September 15th of next month in San Francisco (US). The official Windows team blog announced this conference “Beauty of the web” recently in their blog.
The project manager of IE 9 Team James Pratt said that “the developers were working hard to give new web experience in Internet Explorer 9”.
IE 9 chakra
The Internet Explorer 9 will be good in speed and hardware acceleration, It will be against Firefox and Google’s Chrome browser in handling graphically intensive Websites.
IE9 comes with  new JavaScript engine called Chakra that boosts the speed and performance of IE9 by compiling Javascript in a separate background while Windows runs in parallel on separate cpu. Internet Explorer 9 comes with HTML 5 support, CSS3, DOM style and events.
So we hope IE 9 will be the perfect browser for developers and end users.

Contrary to what the name and the images may suggest, Dead Rising2 is not a survival horror game. There are no eerie secluded locations and no suspenseful missions. This is instead a survival action, zombie-killing hackfest, where environments are brightly lit and the zombies are nothing more than target practice. You’ll find zombies, or ‘the infected’ as they’re called, in hordes everywhere you go, but they’re so slow that most of the time you can just run through them, killing a few on the way if you’re in the mood for some dismemberment or blunt-force trauma. It’s the video game equivalent of Shaun of the Dead.

Though killing zombies isn’t the main objective of the game, it does make it a very enticing activity nonetheless, thanks to the near endless selection of weapons and means by which you can bring the undead some serious pain. Pretty much every object you find lying around, from sledgehammers and chainsaws to stuffed teddy bears and remote-controlled toy helicopters can be used as weapons, more for your amusement and entertainment than anything else.

And rest assured; you will be entertained. But taking the fun to a whole new level are the combo cards, which you will earn as you complete missions and level up. Combo cards allow you to combine two objects to create a deadly weapon. In our play time, we earned two combo cards; the first was the spiked bat, which was a baseball bat with nails in it, and the second was the drill bucket, an ingenious combination of a bucket and a hand drill, which serves as lethal headgear for one unfortunate infected.

As much fun as mowing down zombies with wheelchairs and laundry baskets is, there is actually a story in Dead Rising 2. The protagonist, Chuck Greene, has been falsely accused of causing the zombie outbreak, and it’s his mission to clear his name before the military reaches the city in three days’ time. All this while, he must also look after his daughter, who has been bitten by one of the infected. Once every day, he must administer an antidote called Zombrex to stop his daughter from getting infected. There are side missions too, such as rescuing non-infected humans and bringing them back to the safe house.

Every now and then there will be boss battles too. At the end of our time with the game, we played one such battle, which was against one of Chuck’s reality TV show co-stars – a blood-thirsty maniac riding a motorcycle with two chainsaws strapped to the front. The game plays out over a period of three days, so you don’t really have time on your side. This is also represented in the mission design, whereby each mission lasts a limited amount of time, before which it must be completed.

One thing that really impresses in Dead Rising 2 is the amount of content, variety and customization that’s possible. Besides using pretty much every object as a weapon and being able to combine weapons, you can even walk into clothing stores around the mall – the location of the safehouse, and try on the clothes. Just for kicks, you can have Chuck go on killing sprees wearing a dress and riding a tricycle. But there is one big downside to the game - the lack of checkpoints. The game can only be saved manually and that too at fixed locations i.e. restrooms. Most missions require you to leave the safe house, perform a particular task, and come back, and very often this can take up to 45 minutes. Dying in the latter stages of such missions and having to start over can get frustrating. But from what we’ve played of Dead Rising 2 so far, the positives far outweigh the negatives, and we can’t wait to get our hands on the full game when it hits stores in late September.

LG is gearing up to launch the first of their Optimus range of Android powered handsets in India. Part of the perks of my job is that I sometimes get a chance to give you guys a sneak peak at handsets that aren’t officially launched in the country and in this case it’s the GT540. Unfortunately I can’t give you a detailed review as I was sent a prototype that's still riddled with bugs. In lieu of that, here’s a quick preview of device before it hits the shelves officially.

Form Factor
It’s a slim, sleek handset with curvy lines and a slick brush-metal like finish. Dressed all in black, it’s hard not to notice that it’s a good looking device. Here’s the first mistake LG made though – the GT540 is equipped with a 3 inch resistive touchscreen that will require you to use a stylus for a few things. An even bigger issue is that the stylus is not tethered, nor does it come with a built-in slot, you’re it’s more than likely you’ll misplace it in the first week. Using an Android phone with a stylus is just not a good thing. A couple of touch sensitive keys are placed under the display with button for taking and ending calls and a Home key in the center.

It weighs in at just 115.5g which makes it lightweight and easy to carry around. On one side is a micro USB port for the charger/USB cable as well as a search button and the camera key. Volume/Zoom keys are located on the other side with a 3.5mm handsfree socket on the top. This Optimus also has a hot swap microSD card slot just under the rear panel.

Features and Performance
Interface

The GT540 allows you to choose between the standard Android UI or swap it with a better looking LG version. Android’s multiple desktopswith drag and drop widgets and shortcuts remains the same. For most uses the UI is finger friendly but sometimes it’s quite a struggle just trying to pull down the menu bar from the top of the screen. That’s when the stylus comes in. The Onscreen QWERTY keypad can also be a little unnerving due to the smaller screen size. It’ll take a bit of getting used to without the stylus. It’s a lot easier to use in landscape of course. You also have the option of switching to a standard alphanumeric phone keypad or use the handwriting boxes. The gallery section has a 3D view set up that’s visually, quite attractive and user friendly.

This piece was running on Android 1.6 and although I was unable to update it to 2.1 as the option to update the device OTA was not available, LG did inform me that it would be upgradeable when it hit shelves. Of course it’s very possible it’ll be 2.1 ready out of the box. The best part about the LG UI is that you can create categories for your apps and drag and drop apps to these sections. This makes the layout a little more defined and organized. If you switch to the native interface though, you’re back to square one.

Media
What’s missing from the media section is the Dolby sound engine. That would have seriously added something extra to the handset’s offering. I wouldn’t mind paying a bit more since as is the music player is quite mediocre. Although there’s nothing to complain about when it comes to the output quality, the volume is just a little low. Other than an FM radio and image viewer, the GT540 also supports DivX and XviD video codecs which means you can copy paste videos on the drive for instant playback, no conversion. The player doesn’t allow you to stretch images to fit the screens though, so you’ll need to find a video player that does from the Android Market if you don’t like Black Bands.

A video editor is just one of the many goodies LG has preloaded with this device. It’s quite intensive for those who like making slideshows or adding a bit of flare to their recorded videos.

Dell Studio 15 (Core i5)

Dell Studio 15 (Core i5)

Rohan Naravane, Jul 30, 2010 1648 hrs IST

The ageing Studio 15 is at risk of being eclipsed by the updated Dell Inspiron 15R

Neat styling and great top lids to choose from, optional Full HD screen and Blu-ray drive, good build quality, Firewire and Expresscard support, battery LED indicator, good no. of ports, powerful components (with option to upgrade)

Bulky, slightly uncomfortable while using on lap, no multi-touch on track-pad and backlit keyboard (available on the Studio 14), no upgrade to moderately powered Radeon 5470 GPU

Dell's mid-range segment of laptops, Studio, is for people who want something more than what the basic entry-level models have to offer. We'd tested the Studio 14 a while back when it was in its Core 2 Duo iteration, and found it to be a darn good 14-inch laptop. It had a good build and finish, and great flexibility in its specifications.

Real World Performance

The Studio 15 comes with Windows 7 Home Premium pre-installed. Being powered by the Core i5 M450 processor that runs at 2.4 GHz and 4GB RAM, the system had no trouble in delivering a smooth operation. Basic tasks like internet surfing and watching HD movies aside, this machine is capable to crunch some serious numbers thanks to Intel's Turbo Boost technology. With it, one core can automatically over-clock to 2.66 GHz when heavy single-threaded applications require it to.

The Studio 15 also came with an ATI Radeon 5470 GPU. This is the lower-mid-range graphics chip seen on many laptops in the bracket of Rs. 40 to 50 grand. Resident Evil 5's benchmark delivered a fairly playable 18.3 fps on maxed out settings. We tried Dirt 2's in-game benchmark at high settings, but it lagged badly at 12.8 fps. Surprisingly, dropping the settings to medium or even low didn't really make a big impact. The game was barely playable even on low settings; slight jitter was still observed.

Unfortunately, this is the only GPU that Dell has to offer with the Studio 15. The higher-power Radeon 5650 (that powers the Aspire 5740G) would have been a deserving upgrade to people who want to play today's games on this laptop. But alas, you'll just be stuck with playing games from a few years ago, that too at moderate detail. Repeat: The Studio 15 is definitely not a gamer's choice, but will probably do for people who just want to casually run a few.

Battery Life

Our Studio 15 came with a 56 Whr 6-cell battery but an upgrade to a 9-cell variant is also available. In our video drain test, the laptop lasted for 1 hour 35 minutes with a 720p video played back in loop with full brightness and sound. In the real world test, we red
uced the brightness to 70 percent. We could surf the web over Wi-Fi for a total of 2 hours and 20 minutes. These are average figures, but expected from a 15-inch laptop with power-sipping internals. But still, it is certain that this laptop is no road warrior and you'll have to make sure that you have a wall charger nearby often.

Price and Verdict

The Studio 15 we received comes to a total of Rs. 48,700 with delivery. This machine isn't ergonomically the best out there. It's got souped up specs (except for the graphics chip) inside, enclosed in a what can be called in today's day and age a 'bulky' body. The main incentive to buy a Studio 15 is the option to upgrade to a Full HD screen and a Blu-ray drive. Otherwise for Rs. 50,000 you get the HP Pavilion DV6-3057tx, which comes with a higher-power  ATI Radeon 5650 chip. It has a Core i3 processor (although clocked at a similar 2.4 GHz speed, but no Turbo boost). But on the good side, it comes with that chiclet keyboard we like.

Then there's also the Asus N61J, which has a potent NVIDIA GT325M graphics chip, and also pulls extra tricks like auto-graphics switching (NVIDIA Optimus) to save battery life, and USB 3.0 support. If you want something cheaper, there's always the Acer Aspire 5740G with the same Radeon 5650 graphics chip for a whole Rs. 10,000 less.

The Studio 15 is a decent laptop overall, but there's nothing that stands out for us to go out and hoot about it. Especially after the Inspiron line drawing so close to the Studio, there's not much different between the two. The Studio series is in need of a refresh. If you're just looking for a typical big screened laptop to do your office work,  the Inspiron 15R should do just fine.

To help with these situations, Google went a step ahead by adding the ability to recover your password via text message.
